Abstract

Gender stereotypes continue to exist and are transmitted through the family, media, educational and recreational socialization. These stereotypes promote gender prejudice, discrimination and marginalization in the society. This paper argues that harmful gender stereotypes cause discrimination and marginalization of women in the governance of Benue State. The paper discusses the impact of gender stereotyping on governance in Benue State and asserts that it is a common factor that alienates women from governance in the State. This has created a status of imbalance in governance with negative implications on sustainable development. The paper utilizes both primary and secondary sources for its analysis. The paper avers that, to enhance increased involvement of women in the governance of Benue State, all the negative stereotypes that tend to hinder women from participation in governance and leadership need to be dismantled through the various socialization processes, including sensitization and advocacy. Consequently, sustainable democracy and development would also be enhanced through the contribution of both men and women
