This paper explores the traditional notion of valedictory speeches of a valedictorian. The aim is to expose and challenge the traditional notion of valedictory speeches, with specific focus on the valedictory speech delivered by Justice Musa Dattijo Muhammad. This paper deployed the Critical discourse analysis (CDA) theory to examine how language was used in his valedictory speech to reproduce and challenge power relations in society. Thus, the paper delved into the content and rhetorical strategies employed by the valedictorian in his valedictory speech to construct social identities, relationships, and ideologies. By examining the tone and underlying messages within his speech, this paper unraveled and re-established a fresh perspective that challenges existing perceptions of valedictory speeches. Furthermore, the paper also discovers that the now retired Justice Musa Dattijo Muhammad with distinguished career and profound impact on the legal landscape made his reflections a particularly intriguing case study for this exploration. The paper, then argues that the traditional notion of valedictory speeches is outdated and fails to capture the true essence of the occasion. Instead, it suggests that valedictory speeches should be seen as an opportunity to reflect on one's experiences and share insights that can benefit others. Using the example of retired Justice Musa Dattijo Muhammad, the paper demonstrates how a valedictory speech can be used to inspire and motivate others, and to leave a lasting legacy. The paper concludes by calling for a rethinking of the traditional notion of valedictory speeches, and for a renewed focus on the potential of these speeches to make a positive impact on society.
