Abstract

Apodictic law in the Jewish Torah as emphasized in Ex 22:22-24 is a compulsory rule regarding widows and desolate members of Israel. The neglect of the welfare of widows and other destitute in the ancient Israel society triggered this rule. The researcher sets out to conduct a exegetical study on the chosen text in order to determine the underlying causes and implication of this law in Nigerian context in general and Awkunanaw context in particular is characterised by patriarchy and cultural chauvinisms that coalesce with other causative factors to increase the plight of desolate widows since the ancient time. The practice has been institutionalised and a serious social problem, as victims encounter marginalization, subjugation, harassment, abuse, and other maltreatments from matrimonial relatives. This ill-treatment breeds perpetual enmity, whoredom (prostitution and promiscuity), terrestrial conflicts, family vendetta, and unethical adoption. The researcher recommends that both the leadership and followership of Awkunanaw should make absorption and steady application of the apodictic law in order to sustain human development in Awkunanaw. The research design is exegesis while the methodology is historical critical method.
